While I was sitting in a chat room with three other people in it, I had an idea. What if we had an organized weekly chat session within the Newsvine Community?
The chat feature seems to be widely underused, even after the addition of the new "Chat Lobby" feature. Today when I was sitting in the aforementioned chat room, it was the third time I had ever seen a non-empty chat room on Newsvine. It's a very novel idea, so it's a shame that it doesn't seem to get much use. So, here's an idea that might give it a little bit of use.
Every week at a set time, someone will post an article with a title prefix "Newsvine Chat:" and a tag "weekly-newsvine-chat". This time would probably be something like 4 PM EST on a Sunday, so that we can get our European buddies in on the action as well (I suppose it'd be nice if we could get the whole globe into it, but there are 24 time zones in the world :P). The article would include some topic suggestions and some of the top stories from the last week. Then people could come in and either talk about nothing, as everyone loves to do, or talk about some of the topics on the agenda. The person who would post the article could probably be decided in the comments of the previous article so that we don't get five Newsvine Chats in one day.
I figure we could make it a fairly long event (a few hours) so that people could drift into and out of the conversation IRC-style without being forced to make a time commitment.
Following the chat, someone could grab a transcript and either add a comment to the article or edit the article to include the transcript (if this someone is the author). This would probably be someone with a Jabber client, because it'd be more convenient (and if you need a tutorial on how to connect to Newsvine Chat with a Jabber client, check out Prompt's excellent article).
I'd appreciate the Newsvine Community's thoughts on this idea.
Edit: By the way, here's an idea brought up by Vinay in one of his articles that would make this idea easier:
The ideal solution, that I see (and there is probably a better one), requires a feature that I really want. Chat transcripts. Lots of interesting ideas come up during a chat session, and it would be useful to be able to click a button and review the chat transcripts for an article.
