What In The World? -- Newsvine Spikes Then Valleys

Watching Alexa rankings is a fun way to see what sites became popular at what time. While it may not be good for hard numbers, it's good to use to see trends in visitors to a site. Newsvine appears to have had something interesting occur in their readership.

Alexa rankings for Newsvine.com

If you take a look at the graph, sometime recently Newsvine spiked from about 350 in the "daily reach per million" category to almost 800 and then back to 350 again. I assume that means that 350 users per million visited Newsvine.com?

Anyways, that's a pretty big change; more than double the users. So I wonder what happened recently that would drive so many one-time-only users to Newsvine at once. Would anyone like to take a stab at it?

Hmm? No that's all of it.

I wanted to see if any users had any speculations on the recent influx of traffic.

From what I see there is no title or content to this post. Or this one. Maybe it's my problem.

Yeah, I think you have some sort of caching problem. I don't think it's anything I can help you with, though.

perhaps the influx was due to the netscape naming of Corey as the "navigator" news of the named navigators was posted on all the big sites (netscape, digg, newsive, etc). Maybe many people at those other sites hadn't heard of NewsVine before that annoucement so they came here after seeing one of the named "navigators" was from newsvine.

Actually if you're talking about the most recent surge, yeah that's my fault, but it was because of the Colbert article I wrote. NV staff will tell ya the same.

I figured as much as to why you were at the top for subdomains under newsvine.com, but I didn't think that it would make Newsvine traffic more than double.

Considering his domain captured only 2% of the traffic, it is quite impossible for just that traffic to have any significant impact on Newsvine.

Could it have been due to the listing of one of Yaakov's pieces (Questions on Qana) on the giyus.org (Give Israel Your United Support) website, which caused the screwed up poll (1000+ votes) on the incident in Qana?

Simple answer: Simply don't believe Alexa charts on any site which gets under about a billion page views a month. We simply see zero correlation between Alexa charts and our own (accurate) counts. Ask any other site owners and they will tell you the same thing. June was a record breaking month, then July broke June's record, and now August will probably break July's record.

That's a good point. Just how many people have the Alexa toolbar installed, which does the reporting that goes into these stats? Any newsviners here have that? The sample size is probably far to small to get an accurate account of what is really happening.

Weird. I always thought that while Alexa never gave you accurate hard numbers, they would give you a good way to guage trends.

So the Newsvine counters see no such spike?

I do agree that Alexa is garbage - that dumb little toolbar doesn't even work on Firefox, does it?

Nope, only Windows and Internet Explorer. Link However you can, write to Firefox asking them to include it, or write your own toolbar. Link Isn't that gracious of them?

This is pretty silly - write to Mozilla saying you want Alexa to come with Firefox? HAH! If they have to put that little image saying there is no spyware... there is spyware.
